Why are you watching this years Video Game Awards? Do you even find these awards credible? I personally feel the awards are a bit biased, and I see that as a big problem this year as well. Yes, the winners are picked by us, the gamers, but even then can you really take the awards seriously? I for one am only watching for the debuts, and here is why.

For example, it is completely obvious that Modern Warfare 2 is going to win Best Shooter Award, Best Multiplayer Award and possibly beat Uncharted 2 in Game of the Year (which I feel is the only award that can actually go either way). The other two awards should and will be an easy win for the game. But a superb game like Batman: Arkham Asylum will not even have a chance of winning only because the fanboys of Infinity Ward will just vote MW 2. This is in no way meant to bash Modern Warfare 2, but it seems unfair how other great titles basically have no chance of winning. I will honestly be surprised if Uncharted pulls out the victory, which I hope actually happens.

Why isn't Killzone 2 even in the GOTY nominations? That is the second biggest Sony game for 2009 and yet not a nominee. While I love Left 4 Dead 2, in all fairness I would take that out and give Killzone 2 the spot just because it is a more complete game.

Here is a category that really upset me, Studio of the Year. Valve...really? As stated before, I love Team Fortress 2 and the Left 4 Dead series, but this year they put out a game that many just call a half-assed game, not even eligible to be called a sequel. The entire nominee list just contains the studios that put out the AAA games of the year, (although Rocksteady deserves their spot for putting out such a surprisingly awesome game) but once again no Guerilla Games, who also kept updating and putting out decent DLC for Killzone 2. People wanted certain features, GG gave it to them. And why isn't Bethesda anywhere on the list? Excuse me, but I had no idea that to be Studio of the Year the requirements were to make a hyped game with tons of money in advertisements and launches. I guess a studio that put out five hefty and fun downloadable content packages over the course of a year has no reason to be acknowledged. Not to mention they later sold the original game (Fallout 3) with all of the DLC for only $59.99 when each DLC is $9.99 or 800 points to begin with.

Is Rockstar Games really not eligible for Studio of the Year? The sole reason many bought Grand Theft Auto 4 on Xbox 360 was for the "exclusive episodic content". While many thought the GTA4 DLC wasn't going to be so great, they were sure proven wrong when The Lost and Damned came out in February which added more of the fun things people wanted in the first place. Then recently The Ballad of Gay Tony was released which set the bar even higher. Parachuting, tons of new guns, and a tank...thing...APC. Come on now, no one can deny the GTA content was a very well spent $20 for each. And since this was a major selling point from Microsoft that turned out so well, Rockstar should undoubtedly be on that list.

The VGA's to me are worthless anyway, but these examples alone just upset me. It's like a fly in your house, where it isn't doing any harm to you but you can't get over the fact that it's there. I think it's a shame how these awards are given out and won mostly by the hype-trains of the year. If it weren't for the 11 unannounced games to be debuted that night I would not care if I missed the show. Well, I've spoken my word, now I leave it to you. Agree or disagree? Praise or flame? The comment box is below.

Totally right. Hordes of internet users wont pick the quality entries. Im all for a "peoples choice" award, but letting them pick the actual winners? Fail. Its a slick move on Spike's part, because they can claim "Well we didnt pick the winners, the people did.."

I never knew its picked by the gamers, that is whack! I wonder what the ten year old will pick while 27 age gamers to family gamers...

Hmmm so I guess bigger the fans, the higher chance of winning regardless how bad the game can be...

That's studpid!

that's true too !

Hey 2012 isnt real but corporate soon will own USA fully, they say the government will have to change the organization for the civilization, or the civillians can't handle it anymore... which cause easier to get civil war, it's easier to get hunger, by 2012 that will happen quicker than you think, in third world country and second world... And if nothing change, thats the begining of end. Which will speeds up the super power country to take over, and that's can cause world war 3 !

I dont know why I wrote it. but my friend told me that last year and it was the most interesting i ever heard for 2012!!!
So I thought of sharring this crap!

Uncharted 2 was by far the most complete and most awesome game i have expierenced this year...im upset i wasted 150 bucks for prestige edition....MW2 is all hype...i didnt like it as much as i like COD4:MW...most likely...MW2 is gonna win because it brain-washed all the gamers that brought it....but honestly as soon as i finish Spec Ops (just need 3 more Stars) im sellin that crap!

So I see you're big problem lies with Valve and L4D2 being nominated instead of Guerilla games/Bethesda/Rockstar...

Valve is a worthy candidate at least as much as the other 3: Bethesda and Rockstar indeed gave us excellent DLC packages this year, but no real games (although one can argue GTA DLC is better then full priced titles).

Guerilla on the other hand, worked 6 years and spent well over 60 Million on a game that while looks and feels amazing, actually brought nothing new to the table.
At afraction of the time and a fraction of the cost, Valve gave us a worthy sequel that improves so much over the original, with unique co-op gaming experience and the AI director. At the same time Valve supplied the fans a continuous stream of FREE DLC for older games: both Team Fortress 2 and L4D1 saw great additions this year that prolonged and improved the experience. Valve is a worthy candidate at least as much as the rest of the developers you mentioned, if not more.

As for your original question: I don't care about the votes. I only watch VGA for the exclusive new trailers

Thanks for all of the replies guys, and for Guy, I guess I can kind of see your reasoning on Valve being nominated. But I would guess your reasons aren't why they are nominated, and the real reason is just for L4D 2, which I still feel doesn't warrant a nomination even though I love Valve and all they do.

Uncharted 2 needs to win GOTY 2009, anything else would be an embarassment to the videogames industry.

it's really sad, but Uncharted 2 nearly has no chance to win GOTY, cause it's an PS3 exclusive and the multiplatform fanbase of MW2 is much bigger. especially in the USA where the customer base of the 360 is still much bigger, than the PS3's.
btw, i'm from europe.

You are so right, Left 4 dead 2 should have been a dlc or something like that. It wasnt worthy of $60. Two real maps and the other 2 crap. I went on that website to vote, and I thought the exact same thing.

you can watch all the debuts online within a few hours after they air on tv. so why sit through a painfully shitty award show? lame excuse is lame.

Game awards are never honest. It's about corporate sponsors and how much the awards organisers have been bunged with money, whores, expensive champagne and food.
I'll give you this 18 year old whore for the night if you rig the vote for MW2. And I'll throw in another one you can fuck in the arse.
Sorted. MW2 wins.

not to sound indie-hipster, but popularity does not mean the best. The academy awards for movies aren't totally skewed by popularity and box office grosses... (music awards are a sore subject though, they're screwed up more than game awards IMO)
Gamers on internet surveys are an unreliable source of information, if not for them being anonymous A-hole fanboys, then at least for the fact that the most votes for awards like this are going to go to the games that more people (D-bags included) have.

Well, sales numbers dont lie. When a Ps3 game hits the one million mark in 24 hours, Ps3 fanboys will stop crying.

Left 4 dead 2 game is a joke!

Watched it for the Reach premier. That's it.

The entire show was a joke, from Snoop Dogg (although I think he's pretty funny, what the hell is he doing at a video games award show?) to the cast of Jersey Shore being there. What the hell?
