What "Grand Theft Auto 5" Needs to do
With the recent release of Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony for the Xbox 360, there has been a picture in the manual teasing the next GTA. While the teaser only shows seagulls and little else, people have been speculating the next iteration will take place in Vice City. Nonetheless, people still aren't too satisfied with the GTA4 saga and still believe San Andreas was the peak if the series. So with that, this article will hopefully list all the things people are still clamoring for in a current generation Grand Theft Auto title.
Bring Back the Tank!!!
While the APC in Gay Tony is cool to drive around in and cause havoc, it is still no tank. We all remember causing great destruction after imputing the tank cheat in prior GTA's, but then finding out there wouldn't be one in GTA4 was such a letdown. The biggest complaint for GTA4 was the idea that it wasn't fun enough in the sandbox aspect, so what would be more fun than to bring back the tank? Hop to it Rockstar.
Sell That Dope
The addition of drug dealing in Chinatown Wars was a great feature that everybody enjoyed. And whether the next console installment takes place in Vice City or not, bringing that feature to the console version will surely be a great side mission to do between causing havoc. It was so cool buying ecstasy at such a low price but then bringing in the cash from a bunch of college kids. This idea coupled with the idea of buying your own real estate and cars would really be interesting. It worked so well on the portables, so why not bring it to the consoles?
Easy On The Realism, Tiger
Rockstar seriously needs to cut back on the physics in the next Grand Theft Auto. I too will admit the driving and even walking felt very stiff at times. The reason the past games were great was because of its arcade feel. The animations of the character feel unresponsive and tends to have trouble performing the simple action turning around. Realism in gaming can be great if used correctly. But other than constructing a really well modeled city, realism has no place in GTA. Make the cars a little less heavy and a bit more responsive. It is such a pain failing a mission due to the shoddy mechanics and physics of the cars, which in turn is one of the reasons many disliked the "super sim" GTA4.
DLC for All
Not all of us own all three consoles, so the PS3-only people really got the backhand when it came to the downloadable content for GTA4. I know Rockstar is a company out to make money, but I am still a true believer of fan service. No matter how much money they got from Microsoft, they still would have made a bunch of money releasing the DLC on both platforms. It isn't like they are giving up a huge sum of money for very little, either way they would still make out like bandits. So for the next installment the DLC definitely needs to be available to all. And lastly, keep that DLC coming. It was truly a great idea to keep content coming to the game, and adding more story as well. Rockstar is one of those companies that knows how to do DLC right.
More FUN
Lastly, I'm sure it is pretty unanimous that GTA4 lacked the fun and creativity that the past games had. So I don't think people would mind if Rockstar added a few zany and wild mini games to the fray. Gay Tony made a great start with the APC and parachuting, so all they need to do know is expand on that.
I'm sure this isn't everything that people want in the next Grand Theft Auto, but these are some of the big ones. Rockstar seems to be getting the idea of what people have been asking for, so I think we can all rest assured the next title will "do it right", depending on your views of GTA4. For now, have fun with The Ballad of Gay Tony.

They need to go back to the drawing board when it comes to the missions.
GTA is a game that unfolds not through story, but on how good the next mission is from the last one (breaking into area 51 in San Andreas anyone!?)
GTA4 got boring, the missions consisted solely on driving somewhere kill/collect somebody, driving somewhere else... that was it!
Stumped my faith a little

I disagree
gta 4 realism was perfect for me, I hope they continue this path

wow. Your the smartest person I have ever read posts from. Rockstar should hire you for a lot of money and let you work from home!

Totally agree with the guy at 9:58. Vice City was a masterpiece. It had a great mix of everything from fun missions to a really good story and the best game play of any of the GTA's. But I also enjoyed San Andreas a whole bunch mainly because I really liked the huge map in it also for pretty much the same reasons as Vice City just not pulled off as well.
What I am really trying to get at is I want the fun of Vice City mixed with size of San Andreas and GTA 5 would be a first day buy for me.

What the hell? Make it less realistic? HELL NO! Keep the realistic physics!
I agree that moving the story through the missions is the best way to go too!
Perhaps also adding more locales instead of one huge city will help. Maybe like a desert and a big city or something.

Keep the awesome physics.. but add more stuff. Flying a fighter jet or a tank with the real physics, and not the crappy ones from San Andreas is going to be so much more fun. (that is if Rockstar decides to make the next GTA fun by adding all of this great stuff).
And yeah, the missions in IV sucked. BoGT seemed to be what IV should've been. The mission in BoGT where you stole the buzzard helicopter then blew up the yacht easily trumped ANY mission that was featured in Niko's story.
I also had fun helping Yusuf fly away in a crane helicopter with a subway cart attached to it. Was that realistic? Hell no, but man was it fun lol. Keep going down that path Rockstar and the next GTA will be getting 10/10s everywhere (and this time not just because of the hype)
Anonymous says
Oh, and I forgot to add, MAKE IT FUNNY. Man there wasn't that trademarked Rockstar humor in Niko's story. It came back a little bit in BoGT, like when that guy was attached to a golf cart and you had to hit him in the nuts with golf balls lol.

Anyone who complains about the realism should stick to playing last gen games. The physics engine used in GTA IV is undoubtedly the best feature in the game, and probably the best physics engine in gaming history. The only problem I had with GTA IV was it's lack of weapons, and the cut back on outrageous things like the Jetpack and the scale of the city...but other than that,it's easily the best in the series (this coming from a GTA fanatic).

I think the realism was awesome, fuck you if you want it changed, you can play saints row 2 if you want. That game was awesome, right? And you didn't even address the issue of the lack of badass cheats like flying cars and rioting pedestrians.

listen, gta4 was like a hollywood blockbuster in quality.. but when it comes to recommending to a friend, i always recommend saints row 2 because it was simply MORE FUN. Single player? maybe not, but just the co-op addition alone made it a BETTER GAME. I spent countless hours, simply finding new cars and pimping them out ALONE. GTA4 had such great material, but the fact that they left out things like the parachute (which they DID bring back via DLC, similar to sony realizing they effed up about the vibration in controllers and brought back) and car customization.
I was tired of Liberty City after 1 play through. And YES, i can respect and appreciate all the work they put into it with making it a living, breathing city.. but i was simply over it. I bought LOST and The DAMNED, but even then, i was tired of the same ol city.
So if anything, bring back the fun in gta5... with humor/car variety/customization/etc..
Saints row 2 was simply a game where you could just picture the developers sitting around drinking beer, and coming up with the most hilarious/fun missions.. and it was a better game because of it.

Yeah, I'm going to have to agree with the post on 9:24... you think it's too real? What? The physics and realism are what MADE the game. I'll NEVER sell GTA IV because of the amazing combo of RAGE/Euphoria.
In fact, the technology behind it wasn't exploited ENOUGH if you ask me. I could type for hours about stories that are only possible in GTA IV because of the physics/technology.
As for the DLC request... ummmm... just pick the right console next time and you'll be fine.
Tanks? Drugs? Eh. If it works and doesn't dilute the experience. Making it optional, but flexible is the key. Making it necessary and rigid is what was wrong w/ San Andreas. Vice City is still a masterpiece, just like GTA IV.
"More FUN"... can't argue that one. I think it's a good idea to go a bit more wacky. More importantly, making the missions non-linear would add a whole new dimension. Think about it in terms of Red Faction: Guerilla. Once you really understood the game and the weapons, you could play each mission in a wide variety of ways. Taking out walls in GTA would immediately change the landscape. Destructible environments is the most logical next step.
Adding a stronger NPC logic system is a good idea as well. Bounty hunters, vigilante's, public paranoia, drug/alcohol effects near bars and street corners. They've cracked the surface, but when your character becomes recognizable to the environment - that's when it will get good. "Hey, there's that asshole who shot all those people in my neighborhood!"
Finally, ROCKSTAR! PLEASE LISTEN! If a cop doesn't see you do anything wrong, there are no witnesses, and you are far enough away, there is no magical communication device that should instantaneously make you "Wanted". What's the point of a sniper rifle if a cop chases you after hitting a target a mile away?
... exactly, there isn't a point to it.

Saints row 2 is and always will be better. The car pimping, the character creating, planes, huge map, REALLY fun missions, AMAZING side missions/ diversions/ activities, kick ass cheats, and hundreds of interiors that are great, Co-Op and last but not least it is funny and fun. Only problem with that game is that you have to do side missions to get respect to play the main missions (although the side missions are great). GTA IV has non of those things, ROCKSTAR make sure you have all those in GTA 5 or you will have lost a loyal customer.

First GTA 4 was amazing. fun and beautiful, but i agree with this article. The tank was a blast in the previous games. They should also bring back the airplane, both the private jet and stunt plane. they also need more customizations like in san andreas, especially with cars. Parachute should have been in the standard release of GTA 4.
i like the big city but i loved the open fields in san andreas, driving my cars of cliffs was extremely fun. especially when running from police.
but the most important thing that the next GTA needs is multiplayer offline with split screen, none of that same screen garbage from san andreas, a game where 2 players can go to opposite sides of the map without restrictions, where they can kill eachother or work together.
if it has split screen, that will make it the best but all that was said needs to be put back in. these are some of the reasons why san andreas was ans will always be better than GTA 4.

Yeah i definately agree with the over done physics... i mean, sometimes walking is a bit of a pain, and some of the cars spin out and go all retarded at the slightest turn, and the motor bikes. yeesh. smallest over turn smallest bumb and ur gone. most are good though. im not complaining about the great graphics and physics, infact i love most of them, running people over, pushing people over, brilliance. just that its over done with the walking and can sometimes be rigid and annoying. what made GTA SA so fantastic was its brilliant mix of realism and cartoonness and insane variety which GTA 4 lacks. still love GTA4.

i loved gta 4 for its realism, and the realistic physics. it was so close to the perfect game, but i still feel there could be more done for it.
more guns - and being able to customize them ala hitman would be great. it would be a welcome change not to have just a couple of weapons in every class...
i totally agree with the drug dealing thing, that would be fucking sick.
i want to be able to do up cars again! That was without a doubt one of the best parts of san andreas. made your character more personalized, and the more personalized and customized the game is the more people can enjoy it.
a bigger city? by now i know my way around liberty so well, which makes it feel kinda small. about three times bigger, but with the same level of detail would be fantastic, and would add to the realism.
im sick and tired of niko, or other characters, having set apartments, why cant we choose from a list for ourselves? imagine saving up for a sick apartment, having a choice of a hundred or so in different suburbs. it would be great.
buying businesses? that would be great, just like in vice city, except perhaps with more options, and more autonomy about what goes on in your business. these businesses made for really amusing side-missions from the main story line, and it was nice once you'd done all the stuff for your business to have money ticking into your account.
more missions (a longer game please).
a totally agree with the comment from a couple of days ago, about how its really annoying when the cops automatically know you've committed a crime. that whole thing needs to be overhauled i think, although i know it would be difficult to perfect.
can i have a few more options for girlfriends please? i know it sounds desperately sad. but fuck it im typing on a forum about how to make a video game better so who cares eh.
i guess i've got too much to say but it was such a great game, and with a few added touches it could be even better. let me know if anyone has any other cool ideas. we'll have to start up a petition or something, perhaps stand outside rockstars building with placards maybe.

My biggest complaint about GTAIV was simply the DLC lack of love for Sony. I know 360 fanboys got huge erections when both expansions became 360 only but I feel with what Rockstar made in money from Microsoft they lost in respect from its fanbase. GTA started on Sony and I dont care if they expanded to other consoles but Sony should still be getting all the same things as 360 if not more considering PS3 has so much more potential than the 360.

i loved for reallisim and phisics engines were absoulutly amazing but i have to agrre that if they were to take the insainness of san andreas but realisim of 4 that would be a mindblower!!!

Some suggestions for next game I would like to see would be a period piece of the rise of the mafia in Vegas or Chicago. Another idea i'll like to throw out would be drugging running throw South America locales. There has been rumbling of the series moving to the UK which would definitely have a Guy Ritchie-esqe feel or possibly Layer Cake.

alright, everyone on hear has really overcomplicated comments. here's the bottom line for what needs to happen in GTA5:
keep the graphics and realism the same as they were in GTA4
have more opptions for weapons, cars, where you can live, and how you dress.
be able to customize everything. i.e. your character, your car(s), your apartment(s), and your weapon(s).
make the game longer. WAYYY more missions. i beat GTA4 in one day and it has over 100 missions.
make the map bigger. more city areas and rural areas.
have more opptions for what your character can do. in GTA4 you cant use a jetpack, tank, or a big 747 airplane like you could in GTA SA.
if ROCKSTAR GAMES makes these impdrovements for GTA5, i can GUARANTEE people will be lining up outside Best Buy, Walmar, and Target the night it comes out. with these improvements, the GTA franchise and the ROCKSTAR company will go down in the history books as THE BEST GAME FRACHISE AND GAME COMPANY EVER. all thats needed are these few improvements.
