On November 5th's episode of Gametrailers TV, EA showcased the debut trailer for their new game, Skate 3. As soon as I saw this I thought to myself, "A third one already?". I also couldn't help but think how this yearly formula is becoming similar to the Tony Hawk series.

When the original Skate was released back in 2007, it was a revolution for the genre. The game had a fresh idea on the skating game and people finally had another route to go down instead of buying the next Hawk game. The innovative flick controls was something no gamer had ever seen before. While some may argue the missions may have gotten a bit repetative, the game still did very well and it sure gave Activision a run for it's money.

When 2008 came around and gamers were given Skate 2, the new features and new storyline were greeted with open arms. EA finally added the ability to get off your board and the park editor was also a nice touch. But now it is 2009 approaching 2010, and we are now given the Skate 3 release date, and now I'm wondering just how much longer this franchise will be able to last. EA has made Skate a yearly game, and as we all remember, this is the same way we all got sick of Activision's Tony Hawk games. Even the concept of this next installment seems hacky, where it's the rebel old school skaters versus the new teen skaters. I have no doubt that after Skate 3, the franchise will lose it's luster, and gamers will pass on it as they keep shelling it out.

i agree with your points. The only reason i (as a skate fan) would accept skate 3 with open arms, is because they've tapped into the co-op side of things. In skate2, you could party up with friends and complete activities and it was AWESOME fun. i hadn't even realized the option until my friend showed me the activities section PLUS achievement.

So, the fact that skate 3 incorporates that aspect of the game, i AM excited for it. But with you, i find myself growing a little tired of the formula/scene.

I honestly hope they do skate 3, then MOVE ON to make a SNOWBOARD game with the same graphics/physics/control scheme/ and polish that they've put into skate games because the snowboard genre is really missing a great game for this gen of gaming... and BLACKBOX has really proven itself. I'd absolutely love to see them take on a snowboard game.
